Nintendo's special Zelda 40th anniversary Nintendo Switch 2 launches on October 29, but anyone who did not reserve one early will have a hard time finding it. Pre-orders opened on September 8, right after the Zelda Direct, and sold out the same day.

The design

The console stands out mainly for its controllers. It comes with the first fully colored Joy-Con 2, in a teal green tone with gold details, and the console features a Triforce design inspired by the series' iconography.

Prices

  • Zelda edition Switch 2: US$ 519.99.
  • Standard Switch 2: US$ 499.99, after a US$ 50 price increase in September.
  • Themed Pro Controller: US$ 99.99, or US$ 109.99 with a display stand.
  • Themed case: US$ 39.99.

Sold out and expensive on resale

As of October 18, the console was sold out at the main US retailers. On resale platforms, the average price was around US$ 850, well above the official price.

Nintendo has acknowledged the demand. Bill van Zyll, an executive at Nintendo of America, said the company is "working on replenishments", but did not give a date for new stock. In Japan, Rakuten Books reopened pre-orders on October 21.

Part of a bigger celebration

The console is one piece of a broader anniversary plan, which includes the Ocarina of Time remake on November 5 and the live-action film in April 2027. Special editions like this tend to become collector's items, which explains the rush and the high resale prices.

The best advice for anyone still trying to buy one is patience: avoid paying scalper prices and keep an eye on official stores, since Nintendo has already said that more units are coming.
