After more than a decade in development, Squadron 42 took a concrete step toward release. Cloud Imperium Games opened the game's Steam page, released a new trailer called "The Oath" and set a launch window for the second quarter of 2027.

Wishlist only for now

The page accepts wishlists, but there is no price and no pre-orders yet. The game is coming to PC only. Cloud Imperium develops it, and Roberts Space Industries is listed as the publisher.

What is Squadron 42?

Squadron 42 is a single-player campaign set in the same universe as Star Citizen, but sold as a standalone game. The story takes place in the year 2945. The player is a new recruit in the United Empire of Earth Navy, caught in a conflict that mixes space combat, ship exploration and on-foot missions.

A Hollywood cast

One of the project's biggest attractions is its cast, recorded with performance capture:

  • Mark Hamill
  • Gary Oldman
  • Gillian Anderson
  • Henry Cavill
  • Ben Mendelsohn
  • Andy Serkis
  • Mark Strong
  • John Rhys-Davies
  • Liam Cunningham
  • Jonathan Bailey

A long road

Squadron 42 has been in development since 2014 and has become a symbol of the ambitions, and the delays, of the Star Citizen project, which was crowdfunded by its community. For that reason, many players will believe in the date only when the game is actually in their library.

Still, a Steam page is meaningful. It puts the game in front of a much larger audience than the RSI website and suggests Cloud Imperium is entering the final stretch of development. The window also keeps the game away from GTA VI, which arrives on consoles this November.
