Steam keeps growing. According to SteamDB, Valve's platform reached 43,505,724 concurrent users, a new all-time record reported on October 11. Of that total, 14.46 million people were playing a game at the same time.

Steady growth

The record continues a clear trend. Comparing October peaks over the last few years shows how fast the platform has grown:

  • 2022: 30.2 million
  • 2023: 31.3 million
  • 2024: 38.1 million
  • 2025: 41.6 million
  • 2026: 43.5 million

In four years, Steam added more than 13 million users at its peak. The biggest jump came between 2023 and 2024, and growth has continued since then at a slower but consistent pace.

Online is not the same as playing

The difference between the two numbers is worth noting. The concurrent user count includes everyone logged into Steam, even if they only have the client open in the background. The in-game number, above 14 million, shows how many people were actually inside a game at that moment. Both figures help explain the platform's weight in the PC market.

What comes next

October and the end of the year are traditionally strong periods for Steam, thanks to big releases and seasonal sales. KitGuru noted that the platform could see a small dip in activity in November, since GTA VI launches on November 19 on consoles only, which may pull some players away from the PC for a while.

Even so, the trend points to new records soon. Free-to-play games, the growth of PC gaming in emerging markets such as Brazil and the steady flow of new releases keep pushing the numbers up year after year.
